Worldwide shipments of personal computers grew more than 14 percent in the third quarter, according to two reports, with HP and Apple posting strong market share gains. Gartner said PC shipments rose 14.4 percent in the quarter to 68.5 million units. Rival market research firm IDC, meanwhile, pegged growth at an even more robust 15 percent, with 66.8 million units shipped.

Getting Specific
I have been anticipating the Sales 2.0 conference coming up in San Francisco for many reasons. As a certified, bag-carrying sales guy for a number of years, selling is part of me and though I am an old dog, I do enjoy at least hearing about new tricks. I am also an avid fan of the game and many of my clients have sales-related issues -- if not products -- on which I consult.
Your Real Estate Candidate
I love politics. Say that word Republican and Democrat in civil company and people run for the hills. As a student of marketing that is pathetic. Hopefully, as a student of marketing most of us are open to studying the greatest marketers.
Why We Must React to ACTA
A new global standard for the enforcement of intellectual monopolies is currently being discussed by representatives of the United States, the European Commission, Japan, Switzerland, Canada, Australia, Korea, Mexico and New Zealand. This new agreement is so important that it must be drawn up in secret, safe from the prying eyes of little people like you and me. Thanks, however, to the indispensable Wikileaks, a discussion paper outlining some of its possible proposals has surfaced, and from this it is clear that it represents a serious threat to online liberty in general, and to the practice of free software in particular.

Researchers Step Way Back From Earlier Online Video Ad Estimate
Internet market researcher eMarketer has drastically lowered its estimates on how much businesses will spend on online video advertising in the near future. The New York City-based firm expects spending on online video ads to reach $505 million by the end of this year, down from the $1.35 billion eMarketer predicted earlier this year.
Facebook Cutoff Leaves India Last Bastion of 'Scrabulous'
A highly popular "Scrabble" clone already pulled from Facebook in the United States and Canada continued its tumble over the weekend as the online hangout extended its block of the game throughout most of the world. Facebook said Monday it was forced to disable "Scrabulous" after one of "Scrabble's" rights owners, Mattel, made a formal removal request and the developers of "Scrabulous" took no action themselves.

Sundown On Solaris?
Netcraft -- er, Jim Zemlin, confirms it: Solaris is dying. Customers are leaving it and legacy Unix behind for Linux, in his purview. Open sourcing the platform was too little, too late. Well, maybe not sundown, but it's getting mighty dark out. These are actually not new sentiments; I picked them up from Jim when I talked to him back at OSCON -- a place where, ironically enough, I had also talked to folks from Sun. They were and are smart guys, deeply proud of the work they're doing, but I hope they all understand they are never going to steal any of Linux's thunder. (The refrain I've heard from many different quarters about this issue has been expressed in almost the same exact words by all concerned: "If only they had done this [open sourced Solaris] three/five/ten years earlier...")

Microsoft: Reused PCs Need Windows, Too
Microsoft is working hard to ensure that Windows is the operating system of choice on the growing number of refurbished personal computers being used by budget-conscious nonprofits, schools, and consumers in the U.S. and developing world.
To that end, the Redmond, (Wash.) software maker last year began the Microsoft Authorized Refurbisher (MAR) program to make it easier for refurbishers to install versions of Windows onto desktop computers, says Microsoft Chief Environmental Strategist Rob Bernard.
Of the roughly 70 million PCs sold in the U.S. each year, about 3.5 million are fixed up and resold, according to research firm IDC. The number may rise in the coming months as the economic slowdown forces companies and other purchasers to trim budgets and hunt for bargains. "Demand for all used equipment is likely to grow," says IDC research manager David Daoud.

5 Best Linux/BSD Firewall Tools
Intranet Journal: "Over the course of recent years, some people have found the quality of most out-of-the-store firewall appliances either lacking functionality or worse, set at a price that has made them generally out of reach.
