Judge Rebuffs Stock Exchange's Request to Yank Information Posted by Animal Rights Groups
A Florida federal judge has rejected a request by the operator of the New York Stock Exchange that the names and home addresses of its European directors be removed from an Internet site operated by an animal rights group. NYSE Euronext argued that magazine and the Animal Liberation Front were trying to force the closure of New Jersey-based Life Sciences Research and a subsidiary by harassing NYSE Euronext directors and threatening them with physical violence.

Vista SP1 Analysed in Depth
It's no secret that there's a leaked beta of Vista SP1 floating around, but no-one yet has really taken the time to analyse it in detail to find out what it really does. I made it my mission this weekend to trawl through the registry and file changes in SP1 to find out exactly what SP1 does.
First up, I can say that there is a very noticeable performance increase. It is obvious that since Microsoft released Vista to manufacturing, it has been optimising the code ever since. There's far less hard drive thrashing and in general the system seems much smoother and more responsive. Amusingly, the build of SP1 we saw (which in this beta comes fully integrated into a 3.2GB Vista install DVD, rather than as a standalone update) still has Microsoft's internal network shares embedded as the source of the updates...

Indoor Fountains Make a Great Impression Posted By : James Kraft
For those interested in making a great impression at your corporate or retail headquarters, one item that conveys success, prosperity and reassurance is an indoor fountain. Indoor fountains for many years meant large structures that required plenty of floor space, complicated plumbing and a hefty price tag. However, today, almost any business or retail space can easily enjoy the benefits of an indoor fountain without its excesses. Here are some tips.
To Sir, with Love: How To Get More Women Involved in Open Source
I was an 18-year-old chemistry major working at Dunkin' Donuts when I got my first help desk job. Over a weekend, I went from deep-frying old fashioned donuts to fixing whatever computer a student brought in off the street. And I spent months in the computing center with guys who told stories. Thirteen years later, I'm a sysadmin and a programmer. I still pull all-nighters tweaking Perl scripts or helping a friend move their blog to a new ISP. And I still mostly work with men. We know that Open Source communities want more women. But what can we do to get there? Here are some things that I think we can do right now.

AT&T Wants To Throw Some FCC Roadblocks Into Sprint, Clearwire Joint Venture
In a move that is clearly designed to just piss off and waste the resources of a competitor, AT&T has filed papers with the FCC opposing Sprint and Clearwire's plan to merge their WiMax divisions, which was announced a few months ago (found via Broadband Reports. Of course, AT&T has a chummy relationship with the FCC, who has allowed it to merge with telco after telco without many real conditions (and even telling it that it can ignore some of the conditions it agreed to to get those mergers approved).
In this case, AT&T claims that it isn't really opposed to the merger, but it's filing opposition papers because it feels that Sprint and Clearwire aren't receiving the same level of scrutiny that AT&T received in its mergers, specifically with regards to it spectrum holdings. This seems like grasping at straws by AT&T just to throw some sort of extra paperwork roadblock in the path of the new Clearwire, which is an obvious competitor.

Launchpad 2.0 Radically Improves Collaboration for Open Source Projects
... 2004 has become one of the most highly regarded USA Today has a good roundup of the ways manufacturers are adjusting their programs. Chrysler, for example, is cutting its leasing offers altogether, forcing dealers to find another method of financing leases if they want to offer that option to buyers. Ford is being forced to write down $2 billion in lost value on leases, leading to higher rates, and GM has been ?weeding out riskier customers? over the past year. Customers are affected in a couple of ways: Leases are getting harder to find, and if a customer does find one, the lease is much more expensive than before. That?s not to mention lessees who want to drop their gas-guzzling SUV leases before the terms are up. Lease Programs Trouble Manufacturers, Dealers
18 Million Licenses Sold, 2 Million Short Of Goal
"In an interview with Andy Lees, senior vice president of the Redmond company's Mobile Communications Business, Todd Bishop managed to grab some interesting facts about recent Windows Mobile developments. First, Microsoft sold more than 18 million Windows Mobile software licenses in the last fiscal year, which ended June 30, 2008. This was about 2 million short of Microsoft's widely publicized 20 million target. Lees explained that a few OEMs shipped their devices later than expected, and this was the reason for the shipment target being missed. He declined, however, to say which ones: "That would be unfair to the OEMs."
In the time it took you to read this short post, another 11 licenses were sold.

It's called "buckypaper" and looks a lot like ordinary carbon paper, but don't be fooled by the cute name or flimsy appearance. It could revolutionize the way everything from airplanes to TVs are made.
