Linux 0.10, How Linux Became Usable
Anonymous Reader writes "KernelTrap offers an informative look back in time at the November 1991 release of the 0.10 Linux kernel, continuing their historical series of articles about the early beginnings of Linux. Quite entertaining is a quote from Linus Torvalds talking about when he accidently deleted the Minix partition that he was developing Linux from, causing him to make Linux usable for more than just reading and posting to newsgroups. The article also discusses the creation of the linux-activists mailing list, offering browsable archives of that first Linux discussion forum, full of interesting gems. And finally it describes the first Linux distribution, MCC Interim, which was created and used by the University of Manchester to teach C programming and UNIX."

Meet the Beetles
A couple of years ago, scientists at Cornell named a new species of beetle after President Bush. The fact that it was a slime-mold beetle only heightened the attention. The act was apparently an homage, and Bush even thanked those involved. Around the time, I recall some talk about how animals acquired their names--and a few proposals that ... (Read on Source)

Nvidia Lowers Sales Guidance amid Chipset Flaws
Nvidia Corp., the world’s largest supplier of graphics processing units, has issued a warning regarding lower sales during the ongoing quarter. The company blamed issues with its chipsets as well as low prices of graphics processing units for its fiscal results.
According to Nvidia, second quarter revenue and gross margin are expected to be lower than guidance provided during its first quarter financial conference call and be from $875 million to $950 million. The company said that the estimated decrease in revenue and gross margin is due to several reasons, including the delayed ramp of a next generation core-logic set, price adjustments of the graphics processors to respond to competitive products as well as “end-market weakness around the world”.
This is the first time in years when Nvidia admitted that it has to lower pricing of its graphics processing units to respond to a relatively successful product launch of its main rival, ATI, graphics product group of Advanced Micro Devices.

Infineon Chip May Be Causing iPhone Troubles
According to a research report from Nomura, complaints of dropped calls and unreliable Internet connections on the new iPhone 3G may be caused by faulty software on a chip made by Infineon. Nomura analyst Richard Windsor wrote in a research note that the problem likely involved the 3G cellular network communications chip: "We believe that these issues are typical of an immature chipset and radio protocol stack where we are almost certain that Infineon is the 3G supplier."
Although representatives for Apple and Infineon declined comment, BusinessWeek reported that Apple plans to fix the problem with a software update in the near future. At any rate, a spokesman for AT&T, the exclusive U.S. carrier for iPhone, said that it was working well on AT&T's network and that the carrier had received very few complaints: "This is not something that's high on our radar screen. It's not something we've had a lot of complaints about," said AT&T's Mark Siegel.

Kernel tuning with sysctl
The Linux kernel is flexible, and you can even modify the way it works on the fly by dynamically changing some of its parameters, thanks to the sysctl command. Sysctl provides an interface that allows you to examine and change several hundred kernel parameters in Linux or BSD. Changes take effect immediately, and there's even a way to make them persist after a reboot. By using sysctl judiciously, you can optimize your box without having to recompile your kernel, and get the results immediately.
