Nagin, Jefferson steal forum's thunder

Nagin, Jefferson steal forum's thunder A town hall meeting Saturday on public housing and the Road Home program was enlivened by the unexpected arrival of U.S. Rep. William Jefferson, making his first public appearance in New Orleans since he was indicted last month on federal corruption charges, and a combative speech by Mayor Ray Nagin. (Read on Source)

Bad Stats are Holding Back Web 2.0

Bad Stats are Holding Back Web 2.0 I use “stats” generically here because, at its simplest meaning, what is holding back web 2.0 is bad statistical planning. You have to ask the right questions with the right controls to get the right answers so you can make the right recommendations. The napkin business plan generation apparently has not learned its lesson in [...] (Read on Source)

Re: How to remove blanks in this csv spools

Maybe your column values are wrapping and you have RECSEP set to WRAP. Or perhaps you have RECSEP set to EACH. Try SET RECSEP OFF before your query.

If you're still getting blank lines between rows posting your query and a sample of your output would be a good thing to do.

1-More Scraper Tool

These scrapers are like locusts and here's another $19 pile of crap called 1-More Scanner that bounced off one of my sites today. The user agent was "1-More Scanner v1.25" and it claims it can "Download images, MP3 or any file from any site!" which is an awfully big claim for something that didn't get a single page. Twenty-two hours to go

Twenty-two hours to go Just flew in from Albany (and boy are my arms tired ha ha ha) and putting out phone calls. I have heard of continued interest in Adam Dunn, but as we have discussed ad nauseum, the difference between interest and a deal getting done is simply huge. (Plus, Bowden's interest in Dunn could have been reported as a daily story every day for the last ... (Read on Source)

Linus explains why open source works

Linus Torvalds is often described as an open source champion, interested in licensing only insofar as it affects his ability to share code and improve software more quickly. However, his real position is more complicated -- and to some, perhaps surprising. Asked point-blank which is more important, sharing code or empowering users -- the declared goal of the free software champions whom Torvalds is routinely depicted as being in opposition with -- and his first response in what he calls "the usual Linus polite words" is "That's a really stupid question. Why do you put it as an 'either or' kind of concept?" He then goes on to explain that, because open source operates in the same manner as scientific query, and is a matter of enlightened self-interest, sharing code and empowering users "are not at odds at all" -- a view that, in the end, places him closer to the free software position than either free software or open source followers might care to admit.

New Wireless Bridge Sensors Powered By Passing Traffic

Researchers have developed technology that uses the vibrations caused by passing traffic to power wireless bridge monitoring sensors. Wireless battery-powered sensors that monitor bridges and report changes that may lead to failure are easy to install, but it is unwieldy to provide power for the sensors. Each bridge needs at least several sensors, many installed in hard-to-access locations. Replacing millions of batteries could become a problem, adding to the expense of maintaining the bridges. The researchers have found a way around this problem.

Google Reader Gains Auto-Translation Abilities

We English speakers are truly lucky that so much of the world is willing to accommodate us, learning enough of the language to at least give directions to the nearest bathroom.  But there's an amazing amount of written content out there that isn't in any given person's native language, and to help with this issue, Google Reader has gained an auto-translate option.

NEW ORLEANS - A federal judge said in a Dec. 17 order that a plaintiff cannot prove that he ingested the defendant's PPA-containing cold medication within 72 hours preceding his stroke and, therefore, cannot prove causation (Alejandro Garcia, et al. v.
