Prescription Drugs Still Easy To Buy Online

Although the number of Web sites selling controlled prescription drugs, like OxyContin and Valium, has decreased in the past year, 85 percent of Web sites selling such drugs do not require a prescription according to a new report by The National Center on Addiction and Substance Abuse (CASA) at Columbia University.

Out of 365 Web sites selling controlled prescription drugs, only two were found to be legitimate sites that were certified by the National Association of Boards of Pharmacy, a professional organization representing all state boards of pharmacy.

Funny Money

[Unbelievable: On Romenesko we see this letter about HuffPo's "Unearthed: News Of the Week the Mainstream Media Forgot to Report." Once again this column is filled -- saturated! -- with stories that were, in fact, reported by the mainstream media, as anyone could see by clicking on the links. As I was saying.]

[Later this week we'll be shuttering the blog for 10 days while I go on summer break. My current plan is to let the whole thing go dark. No guest kits, no guest bloggers, no nuthin' -- to just lock up everything, board the animals, turn off the power, turn off the water, and let the blog gradually revert to wilderness. By the time I return the blog will be indistinguishable from a pile of mulch.]

Today the Post reports on executives making $14 million a year, or maybe $27 million. Some of them work for places like Freddie Mae [and Fannie Mac]. I find myself on the verge of taking umbrage.

But mostly I regret that I didn't go to business school. Money has always bored me. To this day, with the economy tanking, I still don't understand anything in the Business section. My strategy has always been to take all my money and put it someplace safe -- newspaper stocks -- and then let the chips fall where they may.

What's clear, it seems from today's headlines, is that people who wheel and deal need the discipline imposed by the knowledge that they are liable for their losses. That hasn't always been the case in the housing market. Lack of discipline also defines the federal government, with both the White House and Congress being so willing to spend money they don't have. Didn't I just say that this deficit would hit nearly half a trillion?

See this piece by Larry Summers :

'To see the temptation and danger inherent in such a situation, one need only look back to the mismanagement of the savings-and-loan crisis. Policymakers protected depositors, allowed institutions to operate even when their fundraising depended on government support and suspended regular standards in order to attract private capital. With gains privatized and losses socialized, taxpayers ultimately ended up with a $300 billion-plus bill (measured in today's dollars).'

Here's Paul Krugman in the Times:

"Lenders ignored the warning signs because they were part of a system built around the principle of heads I win, tails someone else loses. Mortgage originators didn't worry about the solvency of borrowers, because they quickly sold off the loans they made, generally to investors who had no idea what they were buying. Throughout the financial industry, executives received huge bonuses when they seemed to be earning big profits, but didn't have to give the money back when those profits turned into even bigger losses."

--

Check out these two excellent pieces on the Umbrage Epidemic.

First there's this piece by Jonathan Alter of Newsweek. Excerpt:

' One would have hoped that the presence of millions of little press lords on the Web would mean a much greater range of stories. Instead, Web traffic closely tracks the latest cable obsession. Even last week's specter of bank runs for the first time since the 1930s couldn't shift the focus from umbrage to substance. For two days, the Obama-New Yorker flap (and yes, I covered it, too) obliterated everything else in the media universe.

'The good news for Obama (or for John McCain when he makes a gaffe) is that all these weekly flaps quickly pass. When flaps came monthly or quarterly in a campaign, they lingered in the system. Today's media feeding frenzies are the equivalent of junk food, leaving everyone immediately hungry again. The immediacy and ubiquity of the Web intensifies the binge-and-purge cycle, but it also makes it commonplace. Most voters don't notice or remember for long.

'The umbrage and venom and brilliant crowd-sourced insights are all preserved forever in archives, but there's too much of it for anyone to track. By the end of this first Internet campaign, we'll know everything. And nothing.'

Meanwhile, John Dickerson at Slate has been tracking the rise of umbrage as a political weapon. See also Jack Shafer's column on the New Yorker cover.

NBC Seems To Have Learned The Wrong Lesson About Scarcity

Of the various television companies, NBC Universal has always had the most trouble grasping the basic economics of scarcity and abundance, so perhaps it's no surprise that it's still misinterpreting the data that shows its mistake in trying to stop anyone from watching any of the major Olympic events live online. Instead, it forced people to wait until it was aired, hours later, on TV. This is leading to massive frustration, as people hear about various events, but can't see them for a while. Stunningly, NBC Universal boss Jeff Zucker seems to think this is a good thing, claiming:

"There's no question we did the right thing in holding the opening ceremony to air in prime time on NBC that night. The excitement that built out of word of mouth that the opening ceremony was the most spectacular thing that people had seen, that China had wanted to make a statement and they made a statement and people wanted to see that."
Read that a few times and spot the logical inconsistency. He's basically saying that by forbidding people from seeing the content and frustrating them, it built up word of mouth excitement. Apparently, it hasn't occurred to him (despite what his own data suggests) that another way to have built up word of mouth about the events would be to show them so that people could watch them live and tell their friends about it getting them to go see it when it gets rebroadcast again in prime time.

At the link above, Chris Matyszczyk, lays on the satire in responding to this view that forced deprivation breeds word of mouth demand:
So one assumes, given that this strategy has been so successful, the next time NBC's cameras exclusively witness, say, an assassination or a politician saying or doing something nutty, they will keep it to themselves until prime time comes along. You know, just to build up the excitement.
Let's hold NBC to this standard, shall we?

Hosted Web TV Services, to be Powered by Cisco, Adobe, for Telecom Italia

San Jose, California - (The Hosting News) - October 3, 2008 - Web host and Internet hardware networking firm, Cisco Systems, has been chosen by Telecom Italia, along with Adobe, to handle the delivery of next-generation Web TV services.

The Cisco Content Delivery System will be integrated with Adobe Flash Streaming Technology, to bring multimedia content to multiple screens. Live television channels and on-demand content will be delivered through web portal, Yalp!. With the CDS-IS platform and Adobe Flash technology, Telecom Italia can deliver high-quality, rich streaming media content to its viewers enabling them to watch TV shows on their laptops and PCs, accelerating the fusion of TV and the Internet. And because the CDS-IS system supports all major streaming and download formats, including the integrated native Adobe Flash Player, Telecom Italia now has the platform foundation to deliver 'any stream to any screen' in any format.

Sandro Dionisi, Vice President of Network Development and Innovation at Telecom Italia noted, ''We are constantly striving to improve our customer services and experiences. The Cisco CDS-IS with Adobe Flash technology will provide us with the flexibility and scalability we needed to elevate our services to the next level, enabling us to scale Flash streaming while providing resiliency and high-quality services that our customers expect from us. CDS-IS offers us greater control of our delivery infrastructure so that we can cost-effectively create differentiated services that span across multiple screens.''

Consumers are accessing content across PCs, PDAs, mobile phones and other devices on an accelerated basis. Through the deployment of the Cisco CDS-IS and the integration of Adobe Flash technology, Telecom Italia subscribers can view interactive video online with a hassle-free, instant-on Web video experience.

Kip Compton, Director and General Manager, Video and Content Platforms business unit, Cisco noted, ''The visual networking era is under way, and the Cisco CDS-IS platform is helping Telecom Italia go beyond traditional television. Consumers are no longer satisfied with linear programming delivered through the television screen. They want choice and personalized experiences, and they want them on their time across a myriad of devices. The combination of the CDS-IS and Adobe streaming technologies in a single high-performance solution enables service providers to deploy next-generation multimedia services across both traditional as well as converged IP infrastructures.''

Jim Guerard, General Manager and Vice President for Dynamic Media at Adobe remarked, ''The combination of the Cisco CDS-IS with the Adobe Flash Media Server 3 expands deployment options and business opportunities for our customers and brings a new level of interactivity and rich experiences to consumers. The collaboration between Cisco and Adobe to create an integrated solution provides content distributors with more delivery options and is major step toward the shared vision of delivering content, anywhere, anytime, to any device.''

With the Cisco CDS, service providers can offer a variety of services to subscribers now, including streaming intensive Web services, video-on-demand, time-shifted television, video ad insertion, user-generated content and next-generation content delivery network (CDN) services. The Cisco CDS-IS supports all leading Web formats.

The CDS implementation of Adobe Flash Media Server 3 software offers the full benefits of Adobe Flash technology, including improved performance for faster user response and increased streaming protection to help ensure that valuable content is better protected as it is delivered to viewers. The CDS platform provides additional benefits for the hosting and distribution of streaming video with Adobe Flash technology, including content and service routing, dynamic hierarchical caching, load balancing, failover protection, IP multicast extensions, unified management tools and end-to-end quality-of-service (QoS) support.
