New AS3 XMPP Library on Adobe Labs
Almost a year ago I began working on an XMPP library using ActionScript 3. XMPP is a protocol which enables real-time collaboration and presence information to be communicated between clients. (For more information about XMPP see http://www.xmpp.org.) With the new Socket API in Flash Player 9, writing a formal XMPP protocol library in ActionScript was much easier than it was in previous versions of the player and showcased some of the new features of the ActionScript 3 language. I decided to start to write one from scratch.
I have submitted this library to the Adobe Labs repository. You can browse the repository using the link below. The path to the source is 'projects/xmpp' in the 'flashplatform' repository. Christian Cantrell has also made a great post on his blog that describes how to checkout the latest code here.
Over the past year I have made many optimizations and feature additions to the code base and I am still actively developing the library. If you have any suggestions, questions, or patches related to this library, please feel free to email me directly (ddura@adobe.com).
- Browse the source here.
- Download the latest nightly drop of source from the Adobe Labs repository here. (This contains the entire labs source tree.)
Update: The code for this library has been moved to Google Code, where some bug fixes and changes have occured. Be sure to update to that version. Link
07-07-2007: Riverbank Rocks and Roots
While searching for fossils along the riverbank shown above, I noticed what seemed to be a reversal of roles. Rocks form the foundation of the earth (mantle) -- pulverized, they help form soil for plants to grow. All sizes in between add to and help stabilize a variety of landscapes. On this picture, it looks as if tree roots are hugging the rocks, (Read on Source)
FBI Raids Judge's Chambers
Eight carloads of FBI agents recently executed a warrant and searched the chambers of the chief judge of Georgia's Alapaha Judicial Circuit, a county commissioner said. The search took place as federal grand jury subpoenas issued by Assistant U.S. Attorneys were being served on county officials in the five counties that make up the Alapaha Circuit. The subpoenas seek information about a bank account funded by court fees but kept secret from local lawmakers.

Delta to Provide Wi-Fi on Domestic Flights
Delta Air Lines announced today in a press release that it will soon start rolling out broadband Wi-Fi access for its entire domestic mainline fleet of more than 330 planes. The access, which is provided courtesy of a partnership with Aircell, will cost $9.95 on flights of three hours or less and $12.95 on flights of more than three hours. The first planes to have access will be Delta's 133 MD88/90 planes, with coverage expanding to the rest of the fleet early next year.
"Delta remains committed to providing a travel experience that maximizes the time our customers spend with us onboard by offering them even more productivity options...Beginning this fall, our passengers will have the ability to stay connected when they travel with us throughout the continental United States," said Richard Anderson, Delta's chief executive officer.
The move comes after American Airlines began demoing its own in-flight internet access last month; Virgin American, JetBlue, and US Airways also have announced similar plans. However, Delta, who's pricing mirrors that of American's, is clearly pursuing the most aggressive rollout policy of the four companies involved: American only expects to have Wi-Fi in 15 domestic planes, and JetBlue has yet to announce any widespread plans.

Opera in OpenBSD -- I shoehorn it in
The realities of using OpenBSD on this old machine have had me booting Puppy more and more. The reason is that Firefox in OpenBSD can't handle posting to Movable Type. Scripts are constantly timing out, and the experience is more than a little frustrating. The Dillo browser runs great in OpenBSD. It doesn't have tabs, like some versions of Dillo do. But as an interface to something as complicated as Movable Type, Dillo won't work. Since then, I've discovered the free (but not open-source) browser Opera, which is a good deal faster than Firefox (or anything else based on Mozilla) and in Windows a great deal faster than Internet Explorer. Could Opera help me in OpenBSD?
