Band Sues Record Label for Digital Music Distribution Ripoff

Lawsuit notes that Universal "incurs practically no expenses or risks to create and distribute digital downloads yet UMG reaps millions of dollars every year from such exploitation." The Allman Brothers Band have decided to sue Universal Music for more than $10 million USD over royalties from CD sales and digital downloads services, reports Reuters. The lawsuit, filed in Manhattan federal court, said UMG "refuses to pay Plaintiffs at the correct royalty rate for its digital exploitation of the Capricorn Masters," including from CDs, digital downloads and ringtones. The lawsuit centers around a 1985 agreement between the band and Polygram, which Universal later bought, that said the band would be paid half of the profits on any other commercial usage not specified in the agreement like the sale of music downloads on Apple's iTunes for example. "UMG incurs practically no expenses or risks in connection with the Masters, particularly with respect to licensing other companies such as Apple to create and distribute digital downloads .

Cooking Tiles Concept

Cooking Tiles Concept

Here is yet another cooking utensil concept - the Cooking Tiles that was part of an entry to this year's Electrolux design contest. The Cooking Tiles concept assumes that wireless power (WiTricity, anyone?) is an everyday occurence, where individual tiles feature an embedded OLED screen to show the power and heat output. In addition, it will flash to indicate a completed cooking cycle so that you can move on to the next dish on the menu. All tiles are sealed, so you can simply dump them into the dishwasher once you're done and stack them up for storage. Too bad this concept will take a long time in coming, as the conventional stove setup doesn't look like its going away anytime soon.

Morning Discussion

A warm greeting to you, my fellow Shackers, on this somewhat chilly Indiana day.

As things gear up for the Tokyo Game Show, we're starting to see a number of high-profile revelations, such as the new Nintendo DSi and Punch-Out!! Wii.

Personally though, I'm quite excited about Namco's decision to revive Klonoa. The original was easily one of my favorite PlayStation games, and I had assumed the franchise dead after six years without a major title. Talk about a surprise!

And hey, Amazon.com, any time you or your merchants want to deliver that Middleman trade, Collected Series Indispensability, that'd be cool. It's not like I've already been charged and told it'd be here last week while the merchant ignores my e-mails.
