Norway ISO members walk out over OOXML

Norwegian members of the Technical Committee of that country's International Standards Organisation (ISO) body Standard Norge have resigned their posts to protest the approval of Microsoft's OOXML document formats proposal in defiance of the majority recommendation. In all, 13 of the committee's 23 members have resigned, a majority of the membership. In Standard Norge deliberations regarding OOXML earlier this year, only two members ? Microsoft and Statoil ? voted for approval, while the remaining 21 voted against it. Saving Money on Children's Ebooks

If you have taken the step of adding children's ebooks to the activities that you children enjoy, you may have found yourself starting to spend what amounts to a good deal of money on children's ebooks. By following these pointers you will not only end up with more children's ebooks for your kids, but you will have more money left in your purse or wallet as well. Truly, this will be a win-win situation all around.

The first place that you will want to venture when it comes to your desire to save money on children's ebooks is the Internet and World Wide Web. (As an aside, when compared to what is available in the brick and mortar world in the way of children's ebooks, the Net is your best choice all around. While the number of stores and shops in the real world that carry children's ebooks is increasing - slowly - the number of outlets on the Net at which you can find children's ebooks is increasing at a much, much faster rate.)

In short, in the end, you will end up spending next to nothing by purchasing children's ebooks at one or another or the discount ebook sites in operation in cyberspace today.

Beyond these sites, you will also want to venture to the websites that are operated by the publishers of ebooks. Of course, not all published have become involved in children's ebooks. However, of those that have, you oftentimes can get great deals on children's ebooks by buying directly from the publisher's website. Many an ebook publisher is making an extra effort today to enlarge the audience of readers of ebooks, including the audience of readers of children's ebooks. To achieve that goal, these publishers are offering great deals on children's ebooks (as well as other ebooks) as a matter of routine.

Along these lines, when you are dealing with a website operated by an ebook publisher, one option that likely will be available to you is the opportunity to save a good deal of money on ebooks if you purchase a number of ebooks at one time. This tends to include children's ebooks as well. In other words, you can obtain a collection of children's ebooks for one low price in many instances - yet another way to realize a significant savings on the costs associated with children's ebooks.

A Step By Step Guide to Thermal Binding

The purpose of this article is to guide you on how to properly bind a document using a thermal binding machine. If you have access to 5 or 6 thermal binding covers, follow through these binding instructions. If not, read through the material and try binding some documents later. After ensuring that your machine is plugged in and turned on select a smaller thermal binding cover i.e. 1/16", 1/8" or 1/4" and the approximate amount of paper needed to fit into the cover. In normal use, the operator will have a document of "x" number of sheets, which will then determine the proper size of thermal cover to use. The easiest way to do this is to place the paper, indexes, etc. to be bound flat on a table and measure the thickness of the stack with a ruler. Choose a cover that meets that measurement. i.e. if you have a 1/4" stack of paper, you would use a 1/4" thermal binding cover. If you are in between sizes, go to the next largest size. 1. To reduce static electricity that builds up between sheets run off a copier, the paper to be bound needs to be fanned. Take a stack of paper, and practice fanning using the following technique: * Grasp the sheets on both sides, holding them fairly loose. * Bend the sheets as in the following diagram. While bent, exert pressure on the paper with your thumbs and fingers to gain a firm grip where the sheets cannot move. * While maintaining pressure on the sheets, straighten out the stack of paper. This will bow the sheets so that there is air space between sheets. After air has been allowed into the sheets, release your grasp on the sheets as you jog them onto a flat, level surface. This is called fanning the paper. It is usually not necessary unless the paper has just come off a copier, where the pages contain a large amount of static electricity. * Remember, it is the binding edge of the sheets which must be evenly jogged for a secure bind. 2. Place the thermal binding cover in your left hand (if you are right handed), and allow it to slightly fall open to create what looks like a wide V. Insert the fanned sheets into your scored thermal binding cover (make sure that you grasp the sheets tightly to maintain the uniform jogged edge). The sheets should be centered within the cover and placed on the adhesive backbone. Close the cover around the sheets. The first and last sheets should not stick up higher than the other pages. If you have uneven pages, take all the sheets out of the cover, rejog them and insert them back into the cover. 3. Next, place the document (spine side down) so the edge of the thermal cover is at the right hand side of the binding slot. The binding machine should automatically start and depending on the size of your document should determine the length of the bind time. 4. When you remove the bound document, tap the backbone on the table to help set the adhesive, and set the document(s) on the cooling stand to maintain the square backbone during curing. Make sure the document(s) are placed squarely on the cooling stand so that the backbone remains square during the curing process. This will provide the most professional looking finished product. 5. The document must cool before it can be used. It should remain on the stand for 3 to 5 minues. This time period varies depending on the thickness of the thermal binding cover. Obviously, a 1/16" thick document will cool faster than a 2" document. Ultimately, any thermal cover, regardless of size, will have reached full binding strength once the backbone is cool to the touch (approximately 15 minutes).

Creating Your Own Perfect Bound Books Using Your Thermal Binding Machine

Most of the professionally bound books that are available on the market today are bound with a binding style called perfect binding. Perfect binding involves using hot glue and a wraparound cover to permanently bind books or documents without the need for hole punching. This binding style provides an extremely professional look and feel to reports and presentations. However, professional perfect binding machines start at five thousand dollars for a desktop unit and can cost hundreds of thousands of dollars for larger units. For this reason, perfect binding has traditionally been too costly for most individuals. However, using your thermal binding machine and following a few simple steps you can now create your own perfect bound documents in just minutes. Most people who use thermal binding machines use pre assembled covers with glue already in the spine. However, in order to use your thermal binding machine for short run perfect binding you will need to create your own cover. This involves printing a full wraparound cover for your document. If you are looking to bind a document that is 8.5" x 11" this means that you will need a printer capable of printing an 11" x 18" sheet (assuming a 1" or smaller spine). If you don't have a printer capable of printing a large format sheet such as this you might consider a half size book. Either way, printing your wraparound cover is the first step in the binding process. The second step in binding your own perfect bound documents using your thermal binding machine is to score your cover to create a spine for your document to sit in. The easiest way to score your cover and create your spine is to use a scoring device or scoring machine. For low budget, short run applications, a rotary blade trimmer with a scoring blade such as the GBC AccuCut A425pro will work fine. For higher volume applications, a professional scoring machine such as the DocuCrease series of scoring devices may be a better option. Whatever scoring device you might choose, you need to create two clean score lines to create a spine that is sized correctly for the number of pages you are planning on binding. The third step in creating your own perfect bound documents using your thermal binding system is to cut the glue strip to the correct size for your cover. Thermal binding glue strips are sold in 12" x 1" strips and need to be cut to the correct size for your cover. The strip should be cut to the correct width for the spine that you are binding and should be cut so that they are 1/8" short on each end to prevent glue from spilling out of the end of your document into your machine. After you have created your cover, created your spine and cut your glue strip all that is left to do is to put the glue strip in the spine of the cover, insert the pages and bind your document. When inserting the glue strip into the spine of the cover ensure that it is laying flat and that it fills the full width of the spine. Simply place it into the spine of the book, place your pages into the cover and insert the whole document into your thermal binding machine. When the binding cycle is finished, drop the spine of your book onto the counter to ensure that the pages are settled fully into the hot glue and then allow the document to cool. At this point, your document is fully bound. However, many individuals choose to face trim their books in order to make the binding process easier and ensure that the cover and the pages inside the book line up perfectly. This simply involves using a large paper cutter or a stack cutter (the Tamerica Guillomax is an excellent and affordable stack cutter) to cut off the ends and side of the book so that the edge of the book is flush.
